Muslim Scouting America
Scout Law
The Scout Law and Islamic values share many core principles that emphasize character development, service, and integrity. Below is a comparison of how each point of the Scout Law aligns with Islamic teachings:
1. A Scout is Trustworthy
Islamic Perspective:
• Honesty and trustworthiness (Amanah) are fundamental in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was known as “Al-Ameen” (The Trustworthy).
• The Quran says:
“Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due and when you judge between people to judge with justice.” (Quran 4:58)
• A Muslim is expected to be truthful in speech and actions, just as a Scout is expected to keep their word and be honest.

2. A Scout is Loyal
Islamic Perspective:
• Islam encourages loyalty to one’s faith, family, and community.
• Loyalty (Wafa) is an important trait in relationships, whether it be to one’s parents, friends, or country.
• The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“The best of you is the one who is best to his family.” (Tirmidhi)
• A Scout’s loyalty to their patrol, troop, and nation aligns with a Muslim’s duty to be faithful and supportive of their community.
3. A Scout is Helpful
Islamic Perspective:
• Helping others is a duty in Islam.
• The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
“The best of people are those who bring the most benefit to others.” (Hadith, Ahmad)
• Acts of charity (Sadaqah) and helping neighbors are highly encouraged, just as Scouts help others without expecting rewards.

4. A Scout is Friendly
Islamic Perspective:
• Islam encourages kindness and good manners.
• The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“None of you will have faith until you love for your brother what you love for yourself.” (Bukhari & Muslim)
• Friendliness builds strong communities, just as Scouts are expected to be welcoming and inclusive.
5. A Scout is Courteous
Islamic Perspective:
• Respecting elders, being polite, and treating others with dignity is central in Islam.
• The Quran says:
“And speak to people good [words] and establish prayer and give zakah.” (Quran 2:83)
• The Prophet (PBUH) emphasized saying “Salaam” (peace) and using kind words.
6. A Scout is Kind
Islamic Perspective:
• Kindness (Ihsan) is a core teaching in Islam.
• The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“Allah is kind and loves kindness in all matters.” (Bukhari)
• Islam teaches kindness to people, animals, and nature, just as a Scout is kind to all living things.
7. A Scout is Obedient
Islamic Perspective:
• Islam teaches obedience to God, parents, and leaders, as long as it does not contradict justice and righteousness.
• The Quran instructs:
“Obey Allah, obey the Messenger, and those in authority among you.” (Quran 4:59)
• Just as a Scout follows rules and respects leaders, a Muslim adheres to their faith and community.
8. A Scout is Cheerful
Islamic Perspective:
• A positive attitude is encouraged in Islam.
• The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“Do not belittle any good deed, even meeting your brother with a cheerful face.” (Muslim)
• Smiling is considered an act of charity (Sadaqah), aligning with a Scout’s cheerful and optimistic spirit.
9. A Scout is Thrifty
Islamic Perspective:
• Islam discourages wastefulness (Israf) and encourages responsible use of resources.
• The Quran says:
“Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils.” (Quran 17:27)
• Just as Scouts conserve resources and manage money wisely, Muslims are taught to be responsible stewards of their blessings.
10. A Scout is Brave
Islamic Perspective:
• Islam teaches courage (Shuja’ah) in standing for truth and justice.
• The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“The strongest of people is the one who controls himself when angry.” (Bukhari)
• Bravery in Islam means not only physical courage but also moral courage—doing what is right even when it is difficult.
11. A Scout is Clean
Islamic Perspective:
• Cleanliness (Taharah) is half of faith in Islam.
• The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“Purity is half of faith.” (Muslim)
• Islam emphasizes personal hygiene (washing before prayer), environmental cleanliness, and ethical purity, aligning with the Scout’s duty to keep themselves and their surroundings clean.
12. A Scout is Reverent
Islamic Perspective:
• Reverence in Islam means having Taqwa (God-consciousness) and showing respect for faith.
• The Quran instructs:
“Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds and establish prayer and give zakah will have their reward with their Lord.” (Quran 2:277)
• Just as Scouts show reverence for their faith, a Muslim Scout maintains devotion to God and respect for others’ beliefs.
Conclusion
The Scout Law and Islamic values align in fostering character, service, and community responsibility. A Muslim Scout can fully embrace scouting while staying true to their faith. Non-Muslim scouting units can also appreciate these shared values to create an inclusive and respectful environment for all.
